Birth beyond the North Sea

In the 13th century, in Holland, there is evidence of a game called Golf which would be the origin of modern golf. But it was in Scotland, in the 15th century, that it took on its current features when clubs and balls landed on the east coast of the country. In 1627, the first club maker moved north of Edinburgh to St. Andrews. On April 2, 1744, in Leith, the first golf tournament was organized. On this occasion, the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers put in place the first thirteen rules of golf.

A little ball that rolls, rolls…

Initially made up of a cowhide shell filled with feathers then closed with a needle, the golf ball was dressed, from 1848, in a rubber made from natural latex called gutta-percha. This new material helps to facilitate its manufacture, resistance, and costs are improved. The little white ball will now cross borders.

All over the world

As early as 1779, there were golfers in the United States (Virginia). Then the first golf courses opened in India (1829), Australia (1851), and Pau, France, in 1856. The latter was the first course located outside the territories or possessions of the British Empire. Cock-a-doodle Doo!

A sport in the making

Long considered an elitist sport, golf is tending to become a leisure sport with the emergence of numerous courses for the general public. In France, the number of licensees has increased by 40% since the 2000s, and 600,000 people* practice it, which makes it the eighth sporting activity in the country.

Places of practice Golf

Many sports derived from golf make it possible to consider it in a way, let’s say, iconoclastic. On the beach with beach golf, in town with urban golf, equipped with a Frisbee with disc golf, or at home on a cutting mat, everything is possible.

As for “academic” golf, here are the main playing fields:

Driving range: an indoor or outdoor training ground for warming up and/or improving your technique. It allows you to then shine on the course. Ideally.

Course: land where a round of golf is played, it is made up of the teeing ground, the fairway (alley), the rough (high grass), the green, obstacles and of course, small holes, always little holes.

Pitch and putt: reduced-size golf course with 9 to 18 holes located between 40 and 90 meters. Suitable for all levels, and less expensive, it allows you to train your “little game”.

The rules of Golf

The French Golf Federation publishes the official rules of the discipline on 220 pages. Don’t run away. We are going to implement our power of conciseness even if it means making one or two small cuts…

The goal of golf is to hit the ball as few times as possible so that it enters the hole marked by a flag. Easy.

For this, you have a maximum of 14 clubs at your disposal. Each has its specificities and allows you to send the ball more or less far and high.

The course is generally composed of 9 or 18 holes. Each can be played in 3, 4, or 5 shots depending on its distance. You start in the teeing area, then continue your approach on the fairway (meadow) avoiding bodies of water, and sandy areas, and reach the green where the hole is located.

Let’s summarize. You have only one thing in mind from start to finish: to get the ball in with a minimum of shots played.

Golf: What are the Benefits?

When you see the golfers pacing the green course, it is tempting to see it as a walk in the park. It is not so. With more than 370 calories burned per hour, golf tones the body and helps lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels.

Tonic yes, but it’s also about being powerful and precise in your shots. The flexibility of the gesture does not reside in the world of ideas, the body is fully engaged there, from the wrists to the legs, from the bust to the forearms. It is from this flexibility that successful shots appear. But not only.

Concentration, arguably the queen of the discipline’s faculties, is essential. It does not make you tremble, dismiss harmful thoughts, puts the recommendations to follow in the center, and converts your desires into satisfactions.

Finally, and this is precious, golf is a formidable “anti-stress” which invites conviviality, a spirit of sharing, opening up times for discussion in the open air in a green environment tinged with a sometimes outdated romanticism. , certainly, but at the service of an elusive elegance.

Following “green”, the previous sentence got carried away by a misplaced, pretentious, and uninteresting enthusiasm. Please excuse him.

Is golf for you?

With family, friends, or colleagues, golf can be played at any age and without medical contraindications, which makes it accessible to as many people as possible.

If you like outdoor and endurance activities, if you are looking to improve your skills and your ability to concentrate, golf could well appeal to you.

It is now easy to find equipment for beginners at an affordable price and thus to abuse the reputation of a sport reserved for the wealthy classes.

You should also know that more and more golf courses are offering initiation formulas, offers and packages at very affordable prices.

The green awaits you.

The equipment needed to play golf

The Woods:

used at the start of the game, they allow you to cover a long distance.

The expression “send wood” has nothing to do with these “woods”.

Irons:

they are mostly used between the teeing area and the green located around the hole. The angle of the clubhead defines its shot range. The expression “wooden cross, iron cross, if I lie, I’m going to hell” has nothing to do with these “woods” and these “irons”.

The Putter:

on the green, it is used to roll the ball toward the hole.

The putter has nothing to do with any expression. And that’s good.

The accessories :

Balls:

new or used, they cover a wide range of prices, and it takes a dozen to live peacefully. Know that when you are looking for your lost balls, it is not uncommon to find others.

The tee:

used at the start of the course, it is a wooden or plastic peg that raises the ball to facilitate hitting with wood. It basically makes you feel a little more powerful.

The trolley + bag:

a three-wheeled trolley where you can install your bag with clubs, balls, tees, food, and drink.

Prefer light and flexible clothes that will not hinder your movements. Finally, golf shoes offer better grounding, and thus allow you to merge elegance and efficiency in an ode to beauty.
